Pada Bhedas. Positions of Feet

1. UDGHATTITAHA

STHITVA PADATALAGRENA

PARSHNIR BHUMAU NIPATYATE

YASYA PADASYA KARANE

BHAVEDUDGHATTITASTU SAHA
 

Meaning: When the fore part of one foot rests upon the ground and then touches it with the heel, this position is called the Udghattitaha Pada.

2. SAMA

SWABHAVARACHITE BHUMAU

SAMASTHANE CHA YO BHAVET

SAMAH PADAHA SA VIGNEYA

SWABHAVABHINAYASRAYAHA
 

Meaning: When the feet are placed naturally on the ground, this position is called the Sama Pada.

3. AGRATALASANCHARA

UTKSHIPTA TU BHAVETPARSHNIRA

NCHITOANGUSHTAKASTATAHA

ANGULYASCHANCHITAH SARVAH

SAMADASTVANCHITAH SMRUTAHA
 

Meaning: When the heels are raised up and the toes are bent and a dancer moves forward in this position, this is called the Agratalasanchara Pada.

4. ANCHITA

PARSHNIRYASYANCHITA BHUMAU

URDHVAGRATALAM TATHA

ANGULYASCHANCHITAH SARVAH

SAMPADASTVANCHITAH SMRUTAHA
 

Meaning: If heels are dug in the ground and the fore part of a foot is raised up, this position is called the Anchita Pada.

5. KUNCHITA

UTSKSHIPTA YASYA PARSHNIHI

SYADANGULYAH KUNCHITASTATHA

TATHA KUNCHITAMADHYASCHA

SAPADAH KUNCHITAH SMRUTAHA
 

Meaning: When one heel is raised up and a toe is bent, this position is called the Kunchita Pada.

6. SUCHIPADA

UTKSHIPTAM BHAVETPARSHNIRAN

GUSHTHAGRENA SAMSTITA

VAMASCHAIVA SVABHAVASTHAHA

SUCHIPADA PRAKIRTITAHA
 

Meaning: When the right heel is raised and the foot rests upon the great toe and the left foot is in the natural position, this is called Suchipada.
